EPSOM SALT
Epsom Salt is a naturally occurring compound, resulting from the minerals magnesium and sulphate combining with oxygen to form crystals. Since its discovery hundreds of years ago on a spring bank in Epsom, near London, these salts have become infamous as a natural remedy to help relax, minimise stress and remove aches and pains.
Most people have heard about Epsom Salt bath benefits, yet this is only one of many ways to enjoy its therapeutic properties. Some skincare solutions pack their products with Epsom Salt to promote healthier-looking skin or soothe conditions like acne, dermatitis and psoriasis. Others lean on its anti-inflammatory properties to relieve sore muscles and joints.
Nowadays, Epsom Salts find their way into many a shopping basket, the ideal raw ingredient for all manner of DIY health remedies for the skin, hair, and body.
- Magnesium is one of the body's most abundant minerals. Using Epsom Salt can help intensify its presence, causing a positive knock-on effect on the body, from supporting muscle and nerve function to preventing blocked arteries.
- The powerful antioxidant properties in magnesium are critical to our overall health, reducing the damage caused by free radicals and benefiting our organs, bones, cells and skin.
- Anti-inflammatory properties in Epsom Salt are said to relieve body pain and cramps and reduce swelling in more complex conditions like rheumatoid arthritis.
- As an exfoliator, Epsom Salts work to remove dead or dry skin and, on the scalp, provide nutrients that can promote healthier-looking hair.

How to use Epsom Salt
There are many DIY remedies which use Epsom Salt as a raw ingredient – here are some of our favourite applications to try at home:
- Bath Salt: One of the most popular ways to use Epsom Salt is by adding it to your bath water. Place two cups of Epsom Salt into warm running bathwater and soak in the tub for at least 30 minutes.
-
Foot Soak: Take care of tired, sore feet with a relaxing foot soak. Add half a cup of Epsom Salt to a basin of warm water and immerse your feet for 15 minutes or more. After soaking, use a pumice stone to gently rub away dead skin, dry your feet and apply a moisturiser, carrier oil or Shea butter.
-
Hair Treatment: Give limp hair a lift! Mix equal amounts of Epsom Salt and your regular conditioner in a saucepan and heat gently. Once cooled, apply the mixture to your hair, leave for 30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.
-
Cleaning Fluid:  Freshen up your bathroom suite and tiles using an Epsom Salt cleaner. Combine equal amounts of Epsom Salt and dish washing detergent and rub around the porcelain and tiles using an old nail brush or scouring sponge. Rinse with clean water.
-
Garden Aid: Use on grass and garden plants to give your greenery a boost. Mix two tablespoons of Epson Salt with 5 litres of water, add to a watering can and pour onto grass and plants once a week.
Things to consider when using Epsom Salt
- While some sources advertise Epsom Salt as a magnesium supplement or laxative, we do not recommend taking our product orally. Use Epsom Salt as a raw ingredient for cosmetic and external applications only.
- Epsom Salt can irritate the skin and cause a rash. Consider a patch test first to check that your skin is tolerant.
- Store Epsom Salt in a tightly sealed container somewhere cool, dry and away from direct sunlight.
- Whether you purchase in small quantities or bulk Epsom Salts, always choose a reputable supplier.
