Our skin loves carrier oils. They’re easily absorbent, have little to no aroma and are known to be beneficial for most skin types. Their naturally occurring compounds have been seen to help with inflammation, moisture retention and skin protection against the elements.
Carrier oils are an aromatherapist’s 'go-to' as a base for their massage oils. Much like essential oils, they are naturally derived from various botanical species. They also have their own profiles of unique properties known to assist in emotional, physical and general wellbeing.

What Are Carrier Oils?
Carrier oils are naturally derived from various botanical species, extracted from the seeds, nuts or kernels of the plant. When used in massage, carrier oils create the perfect base to dilute essential oils, acting as the 'carrier' for the essential oil so that it can safely absorb into the skin.
While essential oils have their own set of beneficial qualities for skin health and well-being, they are also extremely potent and too harsh to apply to the skin directly. Carrier oils offer a safe application method for topical use. As a result, your skin receives the love and nourishment it deserves, without causing skin irritations.
Why Does Our Skin Love Carrier Oils?
Evidence suggests that carrier oils have been in use for thousands of years. And there’s a good reason for it. From gut health, joint pain and beautification to libido and emotional well-being, carrier oils have been pinnacle ingredients in Ancient Egyptian, Chinese and Ayurvedic medicinal remedies.
While we know a lot more about the benefits now, carrier oils remain to be a rich source of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and fatty acids. As a result, they are known to nourish, moisturise, promote wound healing and replenish the skin and hair either on their own or as a base for essential oils.
Need more convincing? Here are some examples:
Skin conditions and dry, cracked skin: Carrier oils are extremely gentle on the skin and are deeply hydrating. Because of this, they are a popular option for sensitive, dry and problematic skin types. Some carrier oils have natural anti-inflammatory and hydrating properties that may help with various skin conditions.
Pain and inflammation: Some carrier oils contain naturally occurring anti-inflammatory components that are known to ease inflammation within the joints while assisting with muscle stiffness and aches. Using a carrier oil as a base with essential oils such as Lavender, Rosemary or Eucalyptus Essential Oil may assist with aches and joint pain.
Cosmetic and Skincare: When used on their own or as a base to dilute essential oils, some carrier oils are believed to help increase skin elasticity, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and even act as natural make-up removers. Some essential oils that pair well with carrier oils for cosmetic purposes include Rose, Frankincense and Helichrysum Essential Oil.

Are Carrier Oils Safe?
Carrier oils are generally safe for direct use on most skin types. While carrier oils don’t generally cause skin irritations and allergic reactions, we always recommend performing a skin test patch before use:
- Apply a small amount of your chosen carrier oils onto the inside of your wrist
- Monitor the area over 24 hours
- If your skin begins to irritate within 24 hours wipe the area clean with a damp cloth and discontinue use.
Practice caution with any pre-existing allergies that may contribute to an allergic reaction. Carrier oils are derived from the nuts, seeds and kernels of botanical species, this may contribute to reactions associated with tree nut allergies.
Because of this, avoid using Sweet Almond Oil, Macadamia Oil, Apricot Kernel Oil and Argan Oil. If you are unsure about whether your chosen carrier oils will be safe for your skin, speak with your aromatherapy practitioner.
