‘Tis the Season for Scents!
Ho ho ho! We’re only a little while away from the holiday season – and it’s not too soon to start thinking about natural ways to instill the essence of Christmas in your home.
In this article, we’re exploring ways to enjoy essential oils this holiday season beyond burning them in a diffuser or applying them topically to your skin as a seasonal scent. Read on and you’ll learn tips for some alternative ways to bring your senses alive with natural essential oils this festive season.
How to Use Essential Oils This Christmas
Gifting
At Christmas, it’s as much about the giving as it is the receiving of gifts. And this doesn’t need to stop at the gift itself; why not really show someone how much they mean to you with a Christmas present wrapped in beautiful scents?
- Scented gift tags
You’ve wrapped your gift to a friend or family member perfectly in the cutest Christmas paper, ribboned, tagged and good to go. To add that final Christmassy feel, drop some festive essential oil on the ribbon or gift tag.
You can do this with any gift – and even better if you’re gifting an essential oil pack! In fact, why not scent the gift tag using the same oil so your recipient receives a hit that matches the treats inside! - Fabric wrapping
This idea takes your Christmas gift wrapping to an entirely new level! Instead of using paper as a gift wrap, switch it for fabric. You can use Furoshiki (Japanese) fabric or a piece of cotton or linen – or even silk if you want to go high end. Once you have your fabric, wash it as normal but add a few drops of essential oil first so it takes on the festive aroma. No question, the recipient will love the experience of unwrapping a gift ensconced in scented fabric!
Personal Applications
Many fans of aromatherapy love to create their own perfume roller bottles to safely use essential oils on their skin and appreciate the scent and benefits all day long. During the festive season, why not switch up your usual oil for one that’s festive scented instead? And there are plenty of other ways to appreciate it besides on the skin too!
- Hair: Enjoy your scented oil all day long either in a hair serum rubbed through the ends or by adding a drop of oil onto your scrunchie.
- Aromatherapy jewellery: To carry your Christmas-scented essential oil up close and personally, place a drop or two onto your aromatherapy necklace, bracelet or earrings.
- Bath salts: Essential oils and Epsom salts create a wonderfully relaxing bath soak after a long and busy Christmas day (we recommend avoiding the more herbaceous ones in the bath, such as Pine, Cinnamon, and Cedarwood).
- Festive body oil: Try this Christmas essential oil blend to nourish the body and feel refreshingly festive all day long!
Add 50ml of Jojoba Oil, 6-8 drops each of Frankincense Olibanum and Orange Sweet Essential Oils, 3 drops of Clove Bud and 1 drop of Peppermint Essential Oils to a dropper bottle, mix well and apply to dry skin after a shower.
You could also add 8-12 drops of your favourite AWO Christmas Blend EO to your chosen Carrier Oil!
Home
When you want to ‘deck the halls’ with seasonal scents, diffusing essential oils is just the beginning! There are so many ways to ensure that Christmassy feeling throughout your home throughout the holiday season – and here are a few of our favourites:
- Scented bathroom: To bring Christmas to your restrooms, add a few drops of a seasonal essential oil on the inner tube of your toilet rolls.
- Scented tree: Apply a festive essential oil to your Christmas tree by mixing it with water in a spray bottle (you can do this on a real pine tree or an artificial tree). Alternatively, pop a drop or two of essential oil on several of your tree ornaments before hanging them.
- Scented Christmas wreath: Whether yours is a real or artificial wreath, add to its beauty with a few festive essential oil drops on its hanging ribbon.
- Scented Christmas stocking: Santa will enjoy filling stockings after they’ve had a drop or two of your favourite essential oil added to the fabric!
- Scented table linen: Before laying the table for Christmas lunch, wash your cloth and fabric napkins with a few drops of a festive essential oil added to the laundry detergent.
- Scented bed linen: Just as you would your table linen, why not go all out on your bed linen too? There’s nothing like you or any overnight guests falling into bed sheets that have been pre-washed with a few drops of festive-smelling essential oil added to the detergent!
- Christmas cleaning: What a great way to ensure Christmas scents cover your home from top to bottom; by adding essential oils to your kitchen, bathroom and floor cleaning products – you can even make your own natural EO Christmas blend cleaning spray! For this, combine 1 part vinegar to 1 part water in a spray bottle, and add 20-30 drops of essential oil, shake to combine (we recommend Pine Scotch, Cinnamon or Orange Sweet for this!)
- Room sprays: This one will ensure the Christmas scents live on all holidays; filling a few spray bottles with water and a festive essential oil blend and leaving a bottle in every room for an instant lift!

Essential Oil Safety
- Essential oils are extremely potent and can cause serious harm if used incorrectly.
- In line with the Therapeutic Goods Act, we do not recommend ingesting essential oils without the guidance of a registered Aromatherapist or Naturopath. Essential oils should be kept out of reach from children and pets.
- Avoid using essential oils during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.
- Essential oils are highly concentrated and are likely to cause irritation or reactions if applied directly to the skin. For this reason, we recommend diluting your essential oils before using topically (on the skin) - see our dilution table below for guidance. All Peppermint Essential Oils are known to be toxic to pets and for this reason, we advise against using them when animals are present.
Topical Dilution Guidelines
Please note that the following guidelines are recommended for healthy adults:
- General Use: 2 – 4% dilution (4 – 8 drops per 10ml)
- Facial Application: 1 – 2% dilution (2 – 4 drops per 10ml)
Since Peppermint Oil is particularly potent, the recommended topical application for healthy adults is less than the regular recommended amount, as follows:
- General Use: 1 – 2% dilution (2 – 4 drops per 10ml)
- Facial Application: 0.5 – 1% dilution (1 – 2 drops per 10ml)
