Most of us strive for shiny, happy hair – and we’ll do anything necessary to get it!

Castor Oil has become a popular hair supplement in recent years, from encouraging hair growth to deeply nourishing the scalp. In this article, we explore if castor oil is good for hair and how to use this powerful natural oil to achieve luscious locks!

Introducing Castor Oil

You’ve probably heard of Castor Oil, even if you’ve never used it before. This plant-derived oil has been a favoured natural remedy for centuries, used for a variety of ailments since Ancient Egyptian times from alleviating pain and headaches to soothing inflamed skin and easing constipation.

Today, Castor Oil continues to shine brightly in aromatherapy, known for its impressive ability to support overall health and well-being. Yet as we’ve come to discover more about Castor Oil, it’s become apparent just how incredibly nourishing, moisturising and revitalising it is for hair, and particularly beneficial when used to help specific concerns, all thanks to its unique make-up.

What are the key constituents in Castor Oil?

Derived from the seeds of the Ricinus communis plant, Castor oil is steeped in essential fatty acids - some entirely unique to it – which, when acting together, make this natural oil an exceptional hair treatment. Here’s how Castor Oil works its wonders on hair:

  • Ricinoleic acid: This is the primary fatty acid in Castor Oil, making up about 90% of its composition. Ricinoleic acid contains extensive anti-inflammatory properties and is said to stimulate blood circulation and promote growth.
  • Vitamin E: Castor Oil is rich in vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant that helps protect the hair against environmental damage. It can also support hair growth by nourishing the scalp and improving hair health.
  • Omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids: These essential fatty acids help to nourish and moisturise the hair and scalp, improving the elasticity of the hair strands and reducing breakages and split ends.
  • Triglcyerides: Castor Oil contains triglycerides that help lock in moisture, making hair smoother and more manageable. This moisture retention is key to combating dryness and frizz.
  • Proteins and minerals: Although these are found in smaller quantities, the proteins and minerals in Castor Oil contribute to the overall strengthening and conditioning of the hair.

Benefits of Castor Oil for Hair

So, how exactly does this rich blend of essential acids and other active compounds combine to support the hair?

There are several ways Castor Oil benefits hair, helping multiple conditions to achieve healthy, happy hair:

Promotes hair growth

Everybody wants strong and healthy hair, and many sources claim that using Castor Oil can help stimulate hair growth – but is there any truth to these claims?

To date, no scientific studies have gone as far as proving this theory, yet this doesn’t necessarily mean Castor Oil has no impact on hair growth. The properties of Castor Oil are said to increase blood flow to the scalp, stimulating the follicles and promoting healthy hair that grows naturally and without breakages. What’s more, the antimicrobial and antifungal properties in Castor Oil help maintain a healthy scalp and can help combat dandruff, infections, and other issues that could inhibit hair growth. So, while using Castor Oil to grow hair might not be proven, there are plenty of reasons to believe it can promote stronger, healthier hair.

Prevents hair loss

It’s one thing to help your hair to grow – but how does Castor Oil fare when it comes to preventing hair loss? Well, many sources claim Castor Oil is a highly effective natural solution that prevents hair loss due to its potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

The purpose of antioxidants is to prevent free radicals from damaging healthy cells, a process known as oxidative stress. By minimising this stress, the hair remains healthier and can continue to grow strong without loss or thinning. What’s more, by creating an optimal environment for hair growth, Castor Oil can help conditions that can lead to hair loss, such as scalp infections and inflammation.

Be aware that hair loss may be the result of an underlying condition. We recommend you speak with your GP about your condition before using Castor Oil for hair loss.

Moisturises and conditions

One of the key strengths of Castor Oil is its emollient properties. Acting as a natural hair emollient, Castor Oil moisturises and conditions individual hair strands, preventing the feeling of rough, brittle or overly frizzy hair.

Additionally, the ricinoleic acid content in Castor Oil acts as a humectant, drawing moisture from the air into the hair and helping to keep it hydrated and soft. Castor Oil's dense nature then forms a protective barrier on the hair shaft, sealing in moisture and preventing it from evaporating. This helps maintain hydration levels in the hair, especially in dry or damaged hair.

Treats scalp conditions

You might be surprised to discover how many common scalp conditions there are, from common dandruff to more complex infections like Seborrheic Dermatitis. The good news is that Castor Oil could be benefitial in improving many conditions and return an irritated scalp to a healthy one.

Castor Oil's high ricinoleic acid content gives it potent anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, which can combat bacteria and fungi that cause scalp infections. Additionally, Castor Oil's extensive moisturising capabilities can soothe irritation and dryness associated with infections while delivering nourishment to the scalp through its many vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

Note that there are multiple scalp infections, including folliculitis, seborrheic dermatology, impetigo, psoriasis, and ringworm, all of which cause itching, redness, and inflammation. If any such symptoms persist, we recommend you speak with your GP about the potential cause.

Adds shine and lustre

If you’re looking for a solution to add shine to your hair, you’ve found it with Castor Oil.

The various constituents in Castor Oil are a collective powerhouse when it comes to nourishing the hair and giving it shine:

  • Ricinoleic acid is highly effective at sealing moisture into the hair shaft, keeping hair well hydrated and enhancing its natural shine and smoothness.
  • Omegas 6 and 9 improve hair elasticity, helping to reduce frizz and add a glossy finish.
  • Vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant, protects the hair from environmental damage while adding a natural sheen.
  • Triglcyeride compounds in Castor Oil help smooth the hair cuticle, giving the hair a shiny, healthy appearance.
  • Castor Oil enhances natural lustre, leaving the hair glossy and vibrant.

How to Use Castor Oil for Hair Treatment

Castor Oil has a thick and sticky consistency, therefore we recommend you blend it with another natural carrier oil first, like Organic Argan Oil or Grapeseed Oil. Dilute using one part Castor Oil to two parts of another carrier oil.

  • Hair Treatment: Apply Castor Oil directly to your scalp, roots, and ends of your hair to create a nourishing hair treatment. Leave for as long as desired, and then shampoo thoroughly. For added hair-growing benefits, try adding a drop of Rosemary Essential Oil.
  • As a Conditioner: Rub a Castor Oil blend through your fingertips and apply it to the hair from the root to the ends. Leave on the hair for at least 30 minutes, then rinse.
  • Scalp Treatment: Gently warm a small amount of Castor Oil. Apply the oil directly to the affected areas, massaging it into the scalp evenly and leave overnight. Wash thoroughly with shampoo the following day.
  • Eyelash Treatment: Dip a lash brush or clean mascara wand into Castor Oil and carefully apply it to your lashes before bed. In the morning, wash off using warm water.

Safety Considerations

Castor Oil is generally considered safe, although like many oils, there are several factors to be aware of. As such, we always recommend you perform a patch test before incorporating Castor Oil into your haircare routine.

Castor Oil for hair side effects

Castor Oil may trigger allergies and should be avoided by those with nut allergies.

There is some concern that Castor Oil on the hair can lead to felting, a condition where the hair becomes tangled and forms a mass due to it’s thick consistency. It can only be treated by cutting the hair off.

Some medical practitioners use Castor Oil to induce birth, therefore women who are in any stage of their pregnancy should avoid Castor Oil. If you are pregnant, we recommend speaking with your GP or healthcare practitioner to discuss any concerns you have about implementing Castor Oil into your haircare routine.
