Castor Oil Bottle

With a thick consistency, modest earthy scent and a multitude of benefits, Castor Oil has been a highly popular natural remedy for centuries. Its extensive therapeutic properties make it reign supreme in the skincare industry, deeply moisturising and nourishing the skin while easing all manner of conditions.

In this article, we unpack the goodness of Castor Oil and show you just how beneficial it can be when added to your everyday skincare routine.

Understanding Castor Oil

Castor Oil has long been considered one of the most versatile carrier oils for therapeutic purposes. Its rich history stretches back to 4000 B.C. when it’s said Ancient Egyptians used Castor Oil to treat a multitude of ailments, from relieving pain and headaches to calming inflamed skin – some even using castor oil as a laxative.

In recent times, as more information has come to light about its powerful constituents, it’s becoming clearer how this oil can deliver extensive health benefits, particularly when it comes to skin care.

What are Castor Oil’s key constituents?

  • Ricinoleic acid is a rare and highly valued monounsaturated fatty acid found in Castor Oil and contains extensive anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial and antifungal properties.
  • Linoleic and oleic acids in Castor Oil are behind its emollient properties and ability to deeply moisturise and nourish the skin. Linoleic acid also acts as a skin protector against harsh environmental conditions.
  • Various phytochemicals (like flavonoids) in Castor Oil work together to help combat oxidative stress.
  • Stearic acid is an effective natural stabiliser, improving the oil’s consistency and making it easier to apply to the skin.
  • Castor Oil contains small amounts of vitamin E, a well-known antioxidant that helps protect cells from damage caused by free radicals.
  • Fatty acids omega 6 and omega 9 have restorative and nourishing properties, great for skin elasticity.

Benefits of Castor Oil for Skin

It’s not often you get such a nourishing blend of skin-supportive compounds in one pure and natural oil. And when you delve deeper into the properties of Castor Oil, it quickly becomes clear just how wide-ranging and beneficial these can be for the skin.

Here are some of the key Castor Oil skincare benefits from general care to easing specific conditions.

Moisturising benefits

Castor Oil for dry skin
Because of its high content of ricinoleic acid, Castor Oil works in two ways, providing deep hydration for dry skin and also forming a protective barrier on the skin to lock in moisture. Furthermore, the oil’s fatty acids nourish and restore the skin's natural oils, alleviating dryness and promoting ongoing softness.

Castor Oil for normal and oily skin
It’s not only dry skin that loves Castor Oil. The therapeutic properties in Castor Oil help various skin types by balancing oil production, soothing irritation, and providing antioxidant protection. Its unique blend of fatty acids and anti-inflammatory properties make it suitable for both oily and sensitive skin, helping to maintain a healthy, clear complexion.

Anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antimicrobial benefits

From frustrating yet relatively harmless conditions like acne to more painful and complex ones like eczema, all-natural Castor Oil goes a long way towards alleviating symptoms.

Castor Oil for acne
If you're wondering if Castor Oil is good for acne, many users would say yes. It’s believed the antimicrobial properties in Castor Oil can combat the bacteria that leads to acne, while its natural anti-inflammatory component, ricinoleic acid, helps reduce redness and swelling. It can also help eliminate  excess oil and unclog pores, which work to promote clearer, healthier skin ongoing.

Castor Oil for eczema
People with serious skin conditions like eczema have to be incredibly careful when treating it, as the risk of making it worse is high. This is where ricinoleic acid in Castor Oil may be benefitialby helping to deeply moisturise the skin, reduce inflammation and soothe sensitive, affected areas to alleviate itching and irritation.

Castor Oil for stings and bites
With an abundance of critters in Australia, stings and bites are inevitable. Thanks to its anti-inflammatory component, ricinoleic acid, Castor Oil is believed to help alleviate any pain and discomfort caused by insect stings and bites, while reducing swelling and redness.

Castor Oil for fungal infections
While perhaps not best known for its antifungal properties, Castor Oil may indeed help to fight off skin fungal infections, and as such is used by many for conditions such as Athletes Foot and ringworm.

Reducing skin imperfections

From repairing scars and skin tags to fighting the signs of ageing, Castor Oil could prove the optimum solution for dealing with skin imperfections naturally.

Castor Oil for wrinkles
There’s a good chance Castor Oil can help reduce wrinkles due to its high content of ricinoleic acid and vitamin E. Ricinoleic acid deeply moisturises the skin and promotes collagen and elastin production, two proteins that help to maintain skin elasticity and strength, while vitamin E provides antioxidant protection and supports skin repair, helping to improve elasticity and reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

Castor Oil for skin tags
Castor oil may help with skin tags by reducing inflammation and promoting skin healing through its key constituent, ricinoleic acid. Its moisturising properties also support skin health, potentially aiding in the gradual fading or removal of skin tags.

It’s important to note that there is limited scientific research on Castor Oil’s effectiveness for skin tags, and we recommend you consult a healthcare professional if you have irritable skin tags.

Castor Oil for scars
The extensive moisturising and healing properties of Castor Oil can help to reduce scars. Ricinoleic acid works in several ways here, promoting collagen production and skin regeneration, while deeply hydrating the skin to improve texture and appearance, aiding in the reduction of scars over time.

Castor Oil for skin lightening
If you want an oil to even out skin tone, then castor Oil may help you. Its constituents add moisture to the skin and can promote the regeneration of cells to improve its texture, while its hydrating properties help to smooth out uneven areas and enhance overall skin tone.

How to Use Castor Oil for Skin

  • Directly on the Skin: Castor Oil benefits are primarily received by using it directly on the skin. You can use it on its own or combined with safe levels of Essential Oils. It is also often recommended to blend with other Carrier Oil's to thin out its notoriously thick, 'sticky' nature.
  • Skincare Formulations: Amazing for skin, Castor Oil makes the perfect addition to your D.I.Y formulations such as face & skin serums, body butters, lotions and moisturisers.
  • Anti-ageing Eye Cream: Blend 2 drops of Castor Oil with a pump or two of Almond Oil and Shea Butter, then apply gently around your under-eye area to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles & puffiness.
  • Body Oil: Dilute a few drops of your favourite essential oil in Castor Oil and add another carrier oil, to create a soothing and hydrating body oil. Massage into the skin before going to bed and allow its goodness to work while you sleep.

Safety Considerations

Castor oil is composed of a potent mix of skin-loving ingredients, including ricinoleic acid, essential fatty acids, vitamin E, and beneficial phytochemicals. You are encouraged to apply caution when using Castor Oil for the first time on your skin as it may cause a reaction, and a patch test is recommended before regular use.

Potential side effects

Castor Oil is generally considered safe for topical use on most skin types, however, there are some considerations to take into account.

Castor Oil may trigger allergies and should be avoided by those with nut allergies.
